A lost love?

Story type:

23rd August 2018

What is it that truly motivates you each day? Lisa Jones is reminded that Jesus is her first love as she reflects on Revelation 2...

Read: Revelation 2

How important is love? I guess we don’t often think about it. But when we witness love first hand or hear stories of people demonstrating courage and compassion we are blown away. It’s in those moments I am encouraged by others’ passion and determination and selflessness. Like many people I watched the story unfold of the rescue of the Thai boys from the cave after 9 days trapped inside. Everyone in the rescue effort helped in whatever way they could. Divers searched for the boys, another team pumped water out of the cave system and others set up communication lines into the cave. Many other people wanted to help too and were involved in feeding the many rescuers. I am equally encouraged and astounded by the love shown locally by committed volunteers running the night shelter for the homeless each winter for over seven years now. Equally I am shocked and disturbed when there is a total lack of love demonstrated by people who neglect and abuse their children. It makes me so sad that children are deprived of love by the very people who should care for them.

In Revelation 2 John is told to write letters to seven churches in Asia. To each of the churches, there is a strong message. Firstly they are commended for what they are doing that is good. Then they are rebuked and challenged. This is tough love in action.

The first church is based in Ephesus – a big city and a thriving cosmopolitan place. It was academically and financially strong and well known for its religious fervour. The church in Ephesus is commended for their hard work, perseverance and commitment. But then they are rebuked for losing their ‘first love’ – their real true love for Jesus.

I wonder, did they know they had lost their first love?

In my work to reach out to the 95% children and young people who are not in church, I know that I need to make sure that my love for Jesus is what motivates me. It’s being motivated by Jesus’ love that enables me to see all the children and young people I encounter with eyes of compassion.

Today I want to ask Jesus for more of his love. Will you join me?
