Prepare
Although we are always in God’s presence, when we devote a portion of our days to him, we enter into a greater awareness of being with him. Imagine yourself stepping into his throne room as you open your Bible today.

The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad;
let the distant shores rejoice.
2 Clouds and thick darkness surround him;
righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
3 Fire goes before him
and consumes his foes on every side.
4 His lightning lights up the world;
the earth sees and trembles.
5 The mountains melt like wax before the Lord,
before the Lord of all the earth.
6 The heavens proclaim his righteousness,
and all peoples see his glory.
7 All who worship images are put to shame,
those who boast in idols –
worship him, all you gods!
8 Zion hears and rejoices
and the villages of Judah are glad
because of your judgments, Lord.
9 For you, Lord, are the Most High over all the earth;
you are exalted far above all gods.
10 Let those who love the Lord hate evil,
for he guards the lives of his faithful ones
and delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
11 Light shines on the righteous
and joy on the upright in heart.
12 Rejoice in the Lord, you who are righteous,
and praise his holy name.

This week, we have learned about God’s work in the lives of women, children, men, Jews, Gentiles, servants, prophets, soldiers, and nations. He is the same God today as he was then. Whoever you are, whatever your role or status in life, whether you acknowledge him as Lord and King or not, God surely lives and is at work. And this psalm celebrates that.
It is a psalm of contrasts and perhaps paradoxes – he is surrounded by ‘clouds and thick darkness’ (v 2), but ‘all peoples see his glory’ (v 6). The Bible sometimes uses darkness as a symbol of evil, but here it represents the mystery of God’s majesty. Perhaps, too, the clouds are for our protection, for if we truly saw God in all his splendour, Scripture teaches us that we would be unable to live.
His fire consumes his enemies, and the mountains – often symbolising places of worship – melt. The high places where false gods are worshipped are brought low in this, but also God is no longer held at a distance, but comes near.
Respond
God’s people need have no fear of his judgement, because his justice is righteous. We who have been made righteous through Jesus’ sacrifice can simply respond in praise and rejoicing (v 12). Do so now, thanking him for his rule and reign over the world.
