Our belief that the Bible calls us to a distinctive lifestyle of discipleship extends to issues relating to our genders.
We believe that all people are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27) and are of equal worth in the sight of God. The term ‘image of God’ defines who we are: we are in important ways like God and in relationship with him, and all are to be shown respect. The image of God transcends race, gender and any other qualifying aspects of being human that may be considered. God looked at all creation and said, ‘It is good’.
The differentiation of men and women is a key component of God’s creation and reflects his image. Nothing can alter this core element of what it means to be human. God created people either male or female, according to their biological sex, for the purpose of companionship, mutual support and procreation. In line with God’s creation, biological sex determines gender. There is no biblical evidence of a spectrum of sexes, from male at one extreme to female at the other.
We therefore believe that submission to God’s authority over our lives and biblical truth requires acceptance that biological sex determines gender and of the need to live accordingly. This includes recognising that marriage (and hence sexual intimacy) should only be between a person who is biologically a man and a person who is biologically a woman.
We recognise that as fallen people some may at times fall short of this and we believe that grace and forgiveness are always available to those who repent.
