Red Question Mark

Legacy: questions and answers

It is natural to have questions about leaving a gift in your will, especially if you are thinking about writing your will for the first time. We hope this page will provide you with all the information you need

Why should I write a will?

A valid will ensures that your estate is distributed according to your wishes. It enables you to provide for your family and other loved ones, as well as helping charities that you are close to.

Do you offer a will writing service?

Yes, we have a FREE will-writing service.

Working in partnership with Farewill, we have secured several free wills for our supporters, on a first come, first served basis. To find out more click here.

What type of gift can I leave to Scripture Union in my will?

A share or percentage of your residuary estate (Residual): These legacies are paid after all other legacies have been paid. This ensures that your family and loved ones are cared for, and it keeps in step with inflation.

Suggested wording:

I give ...% to Scripture Union of Trinity House, Opal Court, Opal Drive, Fox Milne, Milton Keynes, MK15 0DF (Registered charity: 213422), for its general charitable purposes, and declare that the receipt of the Treasurer or duly authorised officer shall be sufficient to discharge my executors.

A fixed amount of money (Pecuniary)

Suggested wording:

I give to Scripture Union of Trinity House, Opal Court, Opal Drive, Fox Milne, Milton Keynes, MK15 0DF (Registered charity: 213422), the sum of [include words and figures] for its general charitable purposes. I direct that the receipt of the Treasurer or duly authorised officer shall be sufficient to discharge my executors.

A specific item or asset

Suggested wording:

I give to Scripture Union of Trinity House, Opal Court, Opal Drive, Fox Milne, Milton Keynes, MK15 0DF (Registered charity: 213422), my [description of item] absolutely, for its general charitable purposes. I direct that the receipt of the Treasurer or duly authorised officer shall be sufficient to discharge my executors.

Can I leave my gift to a specific area of ministry?

We would encourage our supporters to leave a gift to Scripture Union without specifying what they would like it to be used for. This is the most helpful for us, as it allows us to use your kind gift where our need is greatest.

However, if you are passionate about leaving a gift to a particular area of our ministry, please contact us and we will do all that we can to help you.

I already have a will – how do I include Scripture Union?

It is not necessary to rewrite your existing will to add a gift to Scripture Union; by using a codicil, you can make a simple amendment.

A codicil is a legal document, which must be properly signed and witnessed in the same way as your will, so it might be wise to contact a solicitor regarding this.

I want to leave a legacy to Scripture Union – what do I need to do?

It's wise to consult a qualified solicitor to help you draft your will; a solicitor will be able to advise you on some suggested wording. It will help to include our full address and charity number:

Scripture Union, Trinity House, Opal Court, Opal Drive, Fox Milne, Milton Keynes, MK15 0DF.

Registered charity number: 213422

Should I share my intentions with Scripture Union?

We would love to hear whether you are planning to leave us a gift in your will as this enables us to plan for the future. However, we do understand that a will is personal and private document and you are under no obligation to do so.
