Prepare
Have you ever missed something blindingly obvious? Perhaps something in the fridge that’s right in the centre but you didn’t see it, hints being left by your partner, or an obvious solution to a problem at work?
Bible passage
Jesus heals the blind and the mute
27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, ‘Have mercy on us, Son of David!’
28 When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, ‘Do you believe that I am able to do this?’
‘Yes, Lord,’ they replied.
29 Then he touched their eyes and said, ‘According to your faith let it be done to you’; 30 and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, ‘See that no one knows about this.’ 31 But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region.
32 While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus. 33 And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, ‘Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.’
34 But the Pharisees said, ‘It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.’

I was in the middle of interviewing people for a job. As I showed one candidate out after their interview, someone from our toddler group wanted a word. I was physically there but my mind was on the interview process. It was so hard to put that aside and listen to what the person was saying.
On his way back from Jairus’ house Jesus was interrupted by two men who were blind – physically but not spiritually. They followed him all the way to the place where he was staying (vs 27,28). Notice how Matthew focuses on their faith through a question (v 28) and a statement (v 29). How might you respond to Jesus’ question?
As he left, Jesus was interrupted again – this time by a man possessed by a demon making him mute (v 32). Compare this with a similar healing in Mark 7:32. What do you notice? Not all ailments were attributed to demons, but some were. What do you think about demonic activity?
Finally, compare the responses of the crowd (v 33) and the Pharisees (v 34). Trouble is brewing...
Respond
Are you interruptible? Do you get annoyed when people cut across something you’re doing? Do you notice what God might be saying to you, perhaps through surprising things or people? Ask God to help you pay more attention to him.
