Bible passage
Jesus restores two demon-possessed men
28 When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. 29 ‘What do you want with us, Son of God?’ they shouted. ‘Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?’
30 Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31 The demons begged Jesus, ‘If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.’
32 He said to them, ‘Go!’ So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. 33 Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.

We love the serene picture of Jesus’ birth, surrounded by shepherds and angels. Yet we know Jesus was born into political turmoil, persecution and rejection. We see opposition continue in our readings. Yesterday a furious storm took centre stage (vs 23–27). Today Jesus is confronted with two violently demon‑possessed men taking control (v 29).
I am amazed at how God’s people struggle with his identity, yet demons discern his authority immediately (v 29). They don’t even fight him. Note how few words Jesus uttered. The demons are gone in a rush of noise and chaos. For those who believe in forces beyond our control, this says clearly that, while not under our control, they are certainly under God’s sovereign rule. See how easily Jesus dismisses them! We are left certain this man is of God and certain of the power Jesus has over demons.
The fearful Gadarenes, probably not Jewish because they keep pigs, plead for Jesus to leave (v 34). Really? Do they prefer the power of demons over Jesus’ power? It seems unbelievable.
Just let us not ever be the ones to walk away from God’s power.
