Prepare
Review the last two weeks’ readings and remind yourself of some of the things we have learned about God. He has revealed himself to us day after day, showing himself to be worthy of praise.
Bible passage
The Lord reigns,
let the nations tremble;
he sits enthroned between the cherubim,
let the earth shake.
2 Great is the Lord in Zion;
he is exalted over all the nations.
3 Let them praise your great and awesome name –
he is holy.
4 The King is mighty, he loves justice –
you have established equity;
in Jacob you have done
what is just and right.
5 Exalt the Lord our God
and worship at his footstool;
he is holy.
6 Moses and Aaron were among his priests,
Samuel was among those who called on his name;
they called on the Lord
and he answered them.
7 He spoke to them from the pillar of cloud;
they kept his statutes and the decrees he gave them.
8 Lord our God,
you answered them;
you were to Israel a forgiving God,
though you punished their misdeeds.
9 Exalt the Lord our God
and worship at his holy mountain,
for the Lord our God is holy.
Explore
In some of our earlier readings, we saw several people using the phrase ‘as surely as the Lord lives’ as a sign that their words could be trusted. Yet these words are worthless if the Lord does not live. This psalm talks about a God who is great, holy, mighty and loves justice, and talks of some of those who followed him who are examples to us.
Thankfully, in each of our readings in 2 Kings, we have seen God’s hand at work. We saw his glory as he took Elijah to be with him, his power over water, oil, disease and even death. We have seen him hear and respond to people’s prayers, and have even seen him telling his prophet the plans the enemy king was making! We have seen that he uses even his enemies to complete his purposes, and that he enacts his justice towards all peoples. None of the gods of other nations could act against him, because they were only wood and stone, made by human hands.
Our Lord surely lives, and is worthy of our praise. Let us praise him now.
Respond
Read through the psalm again, noting everything it says about who God is and why he is praiseworthy. Then spend some time thanking and praising him for all those things – and anything else that comes to mind.
