Bible passage

Psalm 76

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm of Asaph. A song.

God is renowned in Judah;
    in Israel his name is great.
His tent is in Salem,
    his dwelling-place in Zion.
There he broke the flashing arrows,
    the shields and the swords, the weapons of war.

You are radiant with light,
    more majestic than mountains rich with game.
The valiant lie plundered,
    they sleep their last sleep;
not one of the warriors
    can lift his hands.
At your rebuke, God of Jacob,
    both horse and chariot lie still.

It is you alone who are to be feared.
    Who can stand before you when you are angry?
From heaven you pronounced judgment,
    and the land feared and was quiet –
when you, God, rose up to judge,
    to save all the afflicted of the land.
10 Surely your wrath against mankind brings you praise,
    and the survivors of your wrath are restrained.

11 Make vows to the Lord your God and fulfil them;
    let all the neighbouring lands
    bring gifts to the One to be feared.
12 He breaks the spirit of rulers;
    he is feared by the kings of the earth.

The God we see in this psalm is truly terrifying (vs 3,5,6,12)! I certainly know which side I would want to be on in the battle described.

Sometimes we are tempted to think that the New Testament God is completely different from the one we see portrayed here. We struggle to square our merciful and forgiving God with the kind of wrath and death described in this psalm. Yet it is only when we grasp the extent of his righteous anger (vs 7–10) that we can truly comprehend the depth of the mercy we have been shown. When Jesus came, God didn’t suddenly go soft on sin and let us off the hook! No – on the cross Jesus bore the fullness of God’s wrath. God has not changed. But in Jesus the way we relate to him has.

I am reminded that throughout the Chronicles of Narnia CS Lewis tells us that Aslan is ‘not a tame lion … but he is good’. As we saw in Hebrews 12, God’s people dared not approach his mountain on fear of death, yet we can draw near because of Jesus’ blood. God has not changed – he has not been tamed – but the price has been paid.

Verse 11 challenges us: ‘Make vows to the Lord your God and fulfil them.’ Do you sense God calling you to make any specific commitments before him? Have you promised God something that you have not yet done?
