Bible passage

Psalm 111

Praise the Lord.

I will extol the Lord with all my heart
    in the council of the upright and in the assembly.

2 Great are the works of the Lord;
    they are pondered by all who delight in them.
3 Glorious and majestic are his deeds,
    and his righteousness endures for ever.
4 He has caused his wonders to be remembered;
    the Lord is gracious and compassionate.
5 He provides food for those who fear him;
    he remembers his covenant for ever.

6 He has shown his people the power of his works,
    giving them the lands of other nations.
7 The works of his hands are faithful and just;
    all his precepts are trustworthy.
8 They are established for ever and ever,
    enacted in faithfulness and uprightness.
9 He provided redemption for his people;
    he ordained his covenant for ever –
    holy and awesome is his name.

10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
    all who follow his precepts have good understanding.
    To him belongs eternal praise.

Should we fear God? David’s reasons for praising our holy and awesome God (v 9) conclude with the idea that ‘wisdom’ begins with fearing him. Why? Current church worship tends to focus on a God of love, but Jesus often expressed anger at the words and deeds of those claiming to be speaking on God’s behalf and failing (‘You have heard, but I tell you…’), declaring that God’s claims on his followers were more exacting than any human demand to simply keep the rules (Matthew 5:20–26).

Perhaps ‘fear’ in this case is about showing due respect to our Creator and his works. Throughout the Bible and recorded history, proud people often come to a sticky end, because they are more interested in building their own reputation instead of serving the common good. However, ‘knowing your place’ is a good starting point for anyone wanting to build anything worthwhile because it shows we are willing to humbly learn from others with more knowledge or experience. Furthermore, remembering what God has done for us (including dying for us on the cross) keeps everything in perspective, even our own aspirations or achievements.

This psalm is an acrostic poem, each line beginning with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Why not create your own poem of praise acknowledging what God has done for you, using the letters of your own name?
