Light FAQs

We've answered some of the questions we think you might have about our decision to discontinue the Light resources…

Why has Scripture Union discontinued Light?

A staggering 95% of under-18s don’t go to church! That worrying statistic has led us to shift our focus over recent years, and our Revealing Jesus strategy is now central to all we do – equipping churches to reach out, explore the Bible and journey into faith with children and young people from ‘the 95’.

Light has enabled hundreds of churches like yours to bring the Bible to life for many thousands of churchgoing children and young people, but the resources weren’t created with 95 children in mind. As we look to the future, we need to invest our limited and precious resources in helping churches Reveal Jesus to the 95. That means saying a difficult goodbye to old friends, such as the Light range, that don't quite fit that mould.

Scripture Union has always produced Sunday school material – why have this changed?

Although we still firmly believe that Sunday schools and other groups aimed at helping churchgoing children and young people to explore the Bible are hugely important, our focus is on helping churches in their outreach, providing inspiration, resources and practical support to those who share that vision.

Where will I be able to buy Light products in future?

Although we’re removing the resources from our website and not reprinting any of the physical materials, many local Christian bookshops will have stock remaining, and you’re likely to find Light resources for some time to come via online shops such as Amazon and dedicated online Christian retailers such as Eden.

Will there be something new to use with Sunday school and similar groups?

It is unlikely that we will be producing any new resources directly aimed at these groups, for the reasons outlined in the first couple of questions above. You may well find that resources we’ve produced to help churches explore the Bible with the 95 are still useful, though, even though they’re not made expressly for Sunday school groups. You can browse and search those resources in our online Resource Centre.

I use Light with non-churchgoing children – why do you think it won’t work with them?

Light can be a useful resource to help you in your work to reach and disciple non-churchgoing children, but it doesn’t follow our Revealing Jesus mission framework. We believe the framework, which provides guiding principles for each stage of the journey that children and young people go through as they find and grow in faith (Connect, Explore, Respond and Grow), is the best basis on which to shape and guide mission to the 95, and we are working hard to ensure that, from January 2025, all our resources are aligned to it.

We use Light material to help non-church children connect with Sunday church – do you offer an alternative?

Although we won’t be producing curriculum material going forward, we do still produce a number of resources that can be used in a small group or Sunday church setting. For example, the Rooted Junior and Rooted range of products are designed to equip you to deliver relational-based sessions – and ultimately learn how to quickly and simply create your own context-specific material going forward.

Do you recommend any other sources for good Sunday school material?

If you would prefer to look elsewhere for your Sunday school material, then we suggest looking at the following alternatives to Light:
