If you're new to Scripture Union, many of the terms we use regularly might be unfamiliar to you. Here are a few of the words you'll see in our communications, along with their definitions…
Faith Guides
Faith Guides are those who have signed up to receive our support as they commit to journeying into faith with non-churchgoing children and young people in their communities. Faith Guides are ordinary people from churches across England and Wales, passionate about Revealing Jesus to the youngest generations. Some may be professional children's and/or youth workers, but many aren't. We''re mobilising an ever-growing network of Faith Guides and we'd love to be there for you too, if you are able to take up one of these vital roles in your community. Find out more here.
Faith Guide Hub
Faith Guides are vital to our Revealing Jesus strategy. Without them, children would not have the role models they so desperately need as they discover and grow in faith. We support Faith Guides with coaching from our expert Mission Enablers and with resources/training materials. These resources can be found in the Faith Guide Hub – an extremely useful resource available exclusively to Faith Guides.
Grow Communities
For many chidlren and young people, traditional church just doesn't seem to be for them, or fit with their culture, so they don't stay part of it for long. Grow Communities are relevant and culturally appropriate worshipping communities that enable the faith of the 95 to flourish in their commitment to Jesus. These groups are peer-shaped, peer-served and adult-guided, with the children and young people setting the agenda along with their Faith Guides. Grow Communities are all about helping children and young people flourish in their faith in ways that work for them, and each and every one will look and feel different because they’re built with the children or young people they’re serving. Local Mission Partner (LMP)
Scripture Union is proud to work alongside and support local groups that are committed to being an expression of Scripture Union in their area. We call these autonomous charitable trusts Local Mission Partners (or LMPs for short). Our Local Mission Partners ensure that there is effective Revealing Jesus-focused mission to the 95 taking place all over England and Wales. Find out more.
Mission Enablers
Mission Enablers are SU staff members with years of experience in mission to children and young people. You'll find them working in our 5 regional teams spread across England and Wales, supporting churches (and particularly those with Faith Guides within them) in their outreach to the 95.
Revealing Jesus mission Framework
The Revealing Jesus mission framework supports effective mission to 'the 95' and is structured around the four stages that most children and young people go through on their faith journey – Connect, Explore, Respond and Grow.
The framework provides shaping principles for each stage but also offers flexibility in expression as we recognise that contexts – and children and young people themselves – vary hugely.
We provide Faith Guides with support and resources for all four stages and for all age-groups. Find out more.
Revealing Jesus Pioneers
Much like our Mission Enablers, our Revealing Jesus Pioneers are experts in mission to the 95, and spend their time enthusing and inspiring churches to think more about reaching out to children and young people in the community. While our Mission Enablers also do this job, this is the sole remit of Revealing Jesus Pioneers – particularly building momentum in towns, cities and rural areas where there is the greatest need and the best opportunities.
The 95
95% of under-18s in England and Wales don't go to church! We've coined the term 'the 95' to refer to this cohort, estimated to amount to around 13 or 14 million children/young people.
