Mallards on water

Guess who's back?

Story type:

Mallards made its comeback in 2023 after 4 years away and opened its bookings to girls, alongside boys. Norfolk doesn't know what's hit it!

Through sailing instruction, games at the campsite, beach time and campfires, as well as worship and exploring the Bible, there'll be plenty of opportunities for young people from across the country to become confident sailors, and get to know Jesus and his incredible love more!

On the water

At SU it’s essential that on all of our holidays, children and young people are kept safe! And on a holiday on the water, that really is a top priority!

The Mallards team is made up of 20 volunteers, most of whom are AALA-assessed sailors who have been sailing on the broads for years! They do lots of preparation and daily risk assessments to ensure that everything is ship-shape and that conditions are safe to sail.

Each boat has three young people and two adults: a skipper, who is an experienced sailor and often a qualified instructor too, and a mate. This means that on board there is one person to teach the technical elements of sailing, and another ready for a chat, games, general well-being, and of course, snacks!

Not only that, but an RYA-qualified senior instructor oversees all sailing and they are ultimately the person in charge whilst out on the water. There's also a power boat alongside the rest of the Mallards Team, with a team member keeping their eyes on everything.

The boats

Just like the sister holiday Kestrels that takes place in Easter (click here to read more), boats will be hired from Hunters Yard and Marthan Boards. For Mallard's they'll be using boats called half deckers, and they look a little something like the one in this photo (photo taken from Hunters Yard website).

Using classic wooden boats with big white sails, you’ll be part of a crew of 5 (3 young people plus a skipper and a mate) as you take to the waters and learn how to sail!

Bonfire

Days are spent sailing and the nights are spent in wooden cabins at a campsite (hot showers included!)

With a big marquee and loads of picnic benches there will be plenty of space to meet together to catch some rays whilst chatting about the days sailing.

Not only that but you can also expect loads of campsite activities, a fully stocked chill-out zone with crafts, cards, games and puzzles, as well as opportunities to make the most of a sports field AND off-the-water activities like a massive wide game in the woods or on the beach!

The Mallards Team cannot wait to see you there!
