Barbara's Story

Over the years, generous supporters have decided that they want to ensure God’s message is proclaimed to children and young people, long after they have journeyed to be with their saviour.

Barbara shares why she is leaving Scripture Union a gift in her Will.

I went to Sunday School only once before the War intervened. Years later my family took me to church, but it was at university that I truly found faith, at a Billy Graham mission. I then taught for three years and ran a Christian Union at my school. Encouraged by two other Christian teachers, I took a Diploma in Theology which led to a position with Scripture Union.

I took assemblies in schools in and around London and trained teachers and sixth formers to run Christian Unions. I also took young people on SU working holidays to Austria, France, Morocco. It was very exciting and I loved it. But you could only stay with SU for five years then because they wanted people who were in close touch with education. So I returned to teaching.

I care deeply about young people - it’s disastrous that today they know so little about the Christian faith and teaching.

So I love how SU is developing Faith Guides to go out and get alongside young people where they are, instead of expecting them to come to church.

I’ve been very impressed too by the way in which Scripture Union hasn’t been afraid to try innovative new ways to communicate eternal Biblical truths using resources like Rooted, Guardians of Ancora, Easter Trails with QR codes. The training SU offers is also vitally important as it enables teachers and the churches to do the work.

"That’s why I’m leaving a legacy to Scripture Union to continue that vital work even when I'm not here."
