When God is all that you have, will he be enough?

Story type:

When the security blanket is taken away, can you trust in God and God alone?

Esther Calvert-Jordan reflects On Numbers 7

Read: Judges 7

Last year when I was praying God asked me a question

‘Will you still follow me without the security of these people around you?’

I pastor a group of students from different universities, we’ve done several events together and had the opportunity to affect lives with the good news of Jesus. Whenever God talked to me about an event or a project he wants us to do, I would call the group together, assign responsibilities and together we would make it happen. But there I was and the Lord was asking me to follow him without the security of my dream team.

He gave me a project to work on but told me that none of my team were going to be involved in it. What followed was exactly that; circumstances had it that not a single one of them was going to be available to be a part of it.

It was here that I felt like Gideon in this chapter. There he was with his army getting ready to defeat the Midianite army. In the previous chapter God had told him that he would win the battle and it took him a few signs before he believed it. After finally being convinced God makes a striking statement in the next chapter;

‘ You have too large an army with you. I can’t turn Midian over to them like this—they’ll take all the credit, saying, ‘I did it all myself,’ and forget about me’ (Judges 7 v 2-3 The Message translation)

From here God tells Gideon to take different steps that reduce his army from the tens of thousands to just 300. But with those 300, they win the battle against a much stronger opposition. (Judges 7 v 2-3 The Message translation)

 As I said, lately I’ve felt a lot like Gideon. God stripped me of the things I would usually rely on and pointed to me to trust in him and him alone, knowing that my ability to accomplish what he asked me to do is not in the people or the resources I have but in him. And I’m excited, because for me this is an opportunity to be able to truly see and recognise God’s hand in this. As the things that would have naturally given me assurance were taken away, they left room for a miracle to take their place. I will trust in him. I will remember that he sent me. And like Gideon I will win.
